Like so many important rituals your child will experience in his or her spiritual journey through the Christian church, baptism is a moment that bridges the symbolic with the literal, and the momentary with the eternal. Baptism is first described in the Bible in the New Testament, when Jesus is baptized by John the Baptist. Baptize comes from the Greek word meaning, “to dip.” This refers to the central ingredient of this sacred ceremony, water, into which we are “plunged into the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.”

An infant’s first baptism is often called a “christening,” for it is during this ceremony that the child’s name is presented publicly to the Church, the family, and God. During the baptism, the first question asked of the parents is “What name do you give your child?" Traditionally, this was an opportunity for the priest to suggest an appropriate Christian name for the child, if the parents had not already decided upon one. Often, the name suggested at baptism was the name of a saint or other famous Christian figure.

The central act of baptism occurs when the priest sprinkles water on the baby’s head, or in some cases, immerses the back of the child’s head in consecrated water. He makes the sign of the cross three times, signifying the child’s baptism in the name of the “Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost.” This is done in accordance with Christ’s final commandment to his disciples before ascending to heaven.

During the baptism ceremony, the Godparents, non-relatives selected by the parents, vow to care for the child’s spiritual growth. This is a commitment that is meant to last a lifetime.

As a symbol of purity before God, many parents choose to don their child in a white, embroidered baptism gown that is either purchased for the occasion, or handed down through the family. It is no coincidence that baptism gowns resemble wedding gowns. In fact, the ceremony is very similar in that the Holy Scriptures speaks of God’s believers becoming “wedded” to Christ. The white baptism gown represents a holy union with God, and the purity attained in His presence.
